Should VMs Be Validated Before Migrated?

March 13, 2026

Migration out of VMware due to new VMware licensing has become top of mind. At Storage Guardian we have lot of experience in migration over the years and it is very important to run 2-step validation before you migrate the workloads. The worst thing that can happen is you can run a migration and see that it was successful but when you login you might see that the data has not been actually migrated.

Here is a link showing how Storage Guardian helps with the validation and the migration. We have worked with customers over many year to run migration processes but to have 2 step verification is very important to consider when you are running a strategy of migration.

Migration out of VMware due to recent licensing changes has become top of mind for many organizations. As companies explore alternatives and plan to move their virtual machines to new platforms, it is important to ensure that migrations are performed carefully and strategically. One key question that often arises during this process is whether virtual machines should be validated before they are migrated. Based on years of experience working with migration projects, the answer is clear: validation is an essential step in ensuring a successful migration.

At Storage Guardian, we have extensive experience supporting organizations through migration processes, and we have seen firsthand how important it is to implement a proper validation strategy. Many migration tools can complete the transfer process and report that the migration was successful. However, a reported success does not always guarantee that everything was actually migrated correctly. In some cases, administrators log into the migrated virtual machine only to discover that certain data sets, files, or applications were not transferred properly. This can create serious operational issues and require additional recovery efforts.

For this reason, we strongly recommend a two-step validation process when migrating workloads. The first step is validating the source environment before the migration begins. This helps confirm that the virtual machine’s configuration, data integrity, and dependencies are all in a healthy state. Migrating a workload that already has inconsistencies or underlying issues can cause those problems to carry over to the new environment. Ensuring that the source VM is stable and ready for migration significantly reduces the risk of complications later in the process.

The second step is validating the workload after the migration has been completed. Even when a migration process finishes without errors, it is important verifying that the virtual machine is fully operational in the new environment. This includes confirming that all data has been transferred correctly, applications start properly, services run as expected, and users can access the system without issues. Post-migration validation ensures that the migrated workload behaves exactly as it did before the transition.

One of the biggest risks in migration projects is silent data loss, where the process completes successfully but critical data is missing or incomplete. Without proper validation, these issues might only be discovered after systems return to production, potentially leading to downtime or operational disruptions. Implementing a structured validation approach helps prevent these scenarios and provides confidence that the migration truly succeeded.

At Storage Guardian, we have worked with customers for many years to plan and execute migration strategies that prioritize both reliability and data integrity. Our approach emphasizes the importance of validating workloads before and after migration so organizations can be confident that their systems and data have been transferred correctly. When organizations adopt a two-step validation process as part of their migration strategy, they significantly reduce risk and improve the overall success of their migration initiatives.
